Student accommodation typically refers to housing options specifically designed for college or university students. CQUniversity’s Student Residences consist of two CQUni owned colleges in Rockhampton and Mackay, managed by CQU staff who specialize in student housing.
Capricornia College on the Rockhampton North campus is a 347-room residence spread across a range of two-story houses (McCall, Gutey, Hopkins, Hutton, Jardine, Byerley, Ballard) where residents are catered for in the dining hall, and four low-set self-catered houses (Swanson 2, 4, 5 & 6) with a full kitchen for residents to take care of their own meals. We have seven self-contained flats occupied by CQU Staff and our VC’s Residence also sits within Capricornia College grounds.
Canefield College on the Mackay Ooralea campus is a 112-room residence with 12 ensuited self-catered rooms in low-set houses (D & E Block), 24 shared bathroom self-catered rooms in low-set houses (A, F & G Block), and 72 studio rooms with ensuite and self-catered facilities (H Block) in a three-story high-rise we call the Pods. We have four self-contained flats usually occupied by CQU Staff.
Living on campus has many benefits. Firstly, it is convenient because we are close to academic buildings, libraries, and other campus resources, saving residents time and money on transportation. It also helps students be part of a community and make friends more easily, whilst living with other students who are going through similar experiences.
In addition, our on-campus housing includes a range of services, such as security, maintenance, and cleaning, and free Wi-Fi to make life easier and more comfortable for students. Each college’s facilities include games rooms, a cinema, study spaces, free gym access and a Res Life Program and Res Life Team delivering fun and social events to help students balance their academic and social lives.
That said, there are responsibilities, and some students may find it difficult to adjust to shared spaces and independent living.
Living in an on-campus residential community requires residents to take independent responsibility for their own self-care and the impact of their behaviour on others. Resident self-care includes, but is not limited to the following:
• getting enough rest, • eating well, • maintaining personal hygiene, • managing illnesses, and • seeking the appropriate care wherever necessary.
Residents are encouraged to use the many resources on campus prepared to assist them in this goal of independent living. Students who are unable to care for themselves or whose behaviour disrupts the community may be required to adhere to an action plan and/or leave the Residential College if such behaviour continues to disrupt the residential community.

Please find below our Residential Agreement applicable for all stays at our Student Residences. If you do not accept these terms and conditions, you must not make an application or booking with us. By submitting an application or proceeding with your booking, you expressly agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

Applying for housing is a quick and simple process to share your personal and contact details, housing preferences and enrolment information with us. Make sure you complete your application in full, you'll know you have because you'll receive an email stating you've submitted your application.
We accept housing applications year round.
Housing offers are notified by email and you need to act quickly (within 7 days), to accept it or the offer will expire. If your plans change, or you want to amend your rooming preference or cancel your application, then please contact us as soon as possible to let us know.
Applications are assessed on multiple criteria including application date and your enrolment status. For returning residents, academic progress and tenancy history including payment status, conduct and room inspection history will also be considered.
Irrespective of academic performance, a decision about admission or readmission will consider whether a student is suitable for residential life, including consideration of the student’s ability to live independently and the student’s behaviour/s and its impact or potential impact on the College community, including risks to themselves and/or others.
The Director has the discretion to refuse admission or readmission to any resident who persistently breaches or fails to respond adequately to guidance and counselling in relation to the Residential Agreement or would otherwise (on the recommendation of Management) be deemed unsuitable for living in the College community.
